Award Winners

On Thursday, November 12, 2009, the Association of Fundraising Professionals—Triangle Chapter of North Carolina will join with other AFP chapters across the United States and the world to celebrate National Philanthropy Day. Our purpose is to recognize outstanding philanthropic achievements in our community—achievements that enhance the quality of life in the greater Triangle area and demonstrates how the spirit of joyful giving can change our community and our world. We are proud to announce this year's award recipients:

Excellence in Philanthropy

Celebrating an individual, couple, business, religious, or service organization whose legacy of achievement is built upon impactful giving to humankind.

Perry Colwell—for philanthropic achievements in the TriangleLloyd "Vic" Hackley—for philanthropic achievements across North Carolina and the nation

Innovation in Philanthropy

Celebrating an approach that demonstrates new and exciting ways of encouraging philanthropy.

Carolina Center for Public Service, Chapel Hill, NC

Outstanding Philanthropic Organization

Celebrating a business, religious, or service organization whose support has left a lasting impact on their community

InterAct, Raleigh, NC

Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser

Celebrating an individual or couple whose volunteer efforts have significantly impacted one or more charitable organizations and the causes they represent.

Nancy and James I. Smith, Stem, NC

Outstanding Fundraising Executive and Development Team

Celebrating the achievements of a uniquely qualified development professional and the team they lead. (Note, this award requires that the development professional being nominated is a member in good standing with the Association of Fundraising Professionals.)

Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy (up to age 20)

Celebrating a young person who has demonstrated extraordinary service to a community or cause.

Jennifer and Michael Hodshon, Cary, NCNathan Woodward, Raleigh, NC

This year's honorees were selected based on their generous and unwavering commitment to causes they have helped promote and move forward. Thirty six nominations were submitted for consideration this year across six unique categories. Award winners were selected after a rigorous evaluation process. The first step involved individual reviews and ratings of all nominations by past presidents of the Triangle Chapter of AFP. The top three nominations in each category were then submitted to a special award selection committee made up of ten Triangle area philanthropists, grant makers and nonprofit community leaders. We would like to offer a special word of appreciation to this year's selection committee:
