Mobilization ceremonies are set for Friday, December 19th for Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC), 30th Heavy Brigade Combat Team
(HBCT) located in Clinton, and Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC) 30th Special Troops Battalion (STB) located in Durham. These two headquarter units are part of the North Carolina National Guard's 30th Heavy Brigade Combat Team (HBCT)
The 30th Heavy Brigade Combat Team (HBCT) Headquarters Company is comprised of all the staff sections of the brigade command that are needed to operate and maintain the staff of the brigade commander. They are command and control center for the brigade. They issue orders to the subordinate battalions, track operations and provide solutions to a wide variety of tasks dictated to the them from the Division and work to mission accomplishment within the
Division and Corp intent.
The 30th Special Troops Battalion (STB) is the newest battalion in the 30th HBCT. After the 30th HBCT returned from Iraq in 2005, they were restructured to meet the new army modular formation model and the "Special Troops Battalion" was formed. Taking a number of units and sections from the HHC of the 30th, and what was referred to as "separate" companies, these personnel were then combined under one umbrella organization as the Special Troops Battalion or (STB) The battalion Headquarters Company is comprised of all the staff sections that are need to operate and maintain the staff of the battalion commander.
They are command and control center for the battalion. They issue orders to the subordinate companies, track operations and provide solutions to a wide variety of issues for the brigade. The have a signal company, intelligence company, military police and support personnel that provide specialized talents for the HBCT to be effective on the modern day battlefield.
Approximately 4,000 soldiers from the 30th HBCT are deploying in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
The 30th Brigade was the first National Guard Brigade Combat Team called to duty in Iraq in 2003 and was the first National Guard Brigade Combat Team to operate as a stand alone brigade with its own area of operation in Iraq. The 30th returned to NC in January and February of 2005. During their mission in eastern Diyala and Salah Ad Din Provinces they built schools, trained the Iraqi Security Forces, established Joint Command Centers with Iraqi Security Forces and patrolled the Iranian border with Iraqi Border Patrol. They engaged in numerous combat operations suffering five killed in action and about one hundred twenty wounded in action, most of those returned to duty.
