Brenda James hasn't seen her son's smiling face in 14 months. He son, Randolph James, was gunned down in Durham during a gang fight in August 2007. Brenda James admits the pain of losing her youngest child never goes away.
"I think Randolph brought a peace and lovingness to this family that is missed," James said. "I miss his personality and I missing him walking through the door and giving me a hug and kiss."
But a local youth enrichment organization in Durham is working to keep those memories alive. Breathe On Me Entertainment is a non-profit organization created to give kids in low-income neighborhoods an outlet to express themselves musically.
"There are so many kids with so many talents we give them place to express them," said Dezrick Dixon, founder of B.O.M. Entertainment. "They can record demo, express their feelings through writing and we give that avenue to do that."
The group also gives back to families whose lives have been forever changed by gang violence. Every Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday the group of 20 teens and volunteers set up a donation booth at the Kroger Grocery Store on Martin Luther King Boulvard in Durham.
All the money goes to 17 families the group has chosen to give back to. Dixon said the families can use the money to start scholarships, help with funeral cost, or other family matters.
"We just want them to know we care and that we are praying for them."
