DURHAM, N.C. -

November 3 is technically no holiday for Gary Green. After all, the Durham resident works two jobs. But he's a voter. So Monday felt more like Christmas Eve.

"Our vote is the one last thing we have as Americans that's confidential and private," he said at Durham's Board of Elections office Monday.

Green came to make sure he knew exactly where to show up tomorrow. More than 97,600 already cast their votes in One Stop Early Voting here. He didn't on purpose.

"You wouldn't celebrate the fourth of July on the third, would you," he said. "It's just fun to wait until Election Day ... walk up to the poll."

And so Election Officials expect thousands like him to show up Tuesday. Polls open at 6:30 in the morning and close 13 hours later at 7:30 p.m.

"The biggest turnout Durham ever had was 73 percent in the '04 Presidential," said Mike Ashe, Director of Durham's Board of Elections. "I expect we'll do in the mid-80s: 83 ... 84 - huge turnout tomorrow."

Add in 4,500 "absentee by mail" votes to the 97,600 early voters and more than 102,000 already cast their ballots in Durham. But there are 175,000 registered voters. So Ashe knows there's a lot more to come.

"This is the Board of Elections. We like people to vote. This is wonderful," he said about the historic numbers for Durham. "We have been working every day for the last ten weeks; some of us - a little more than that."

One thing that's kept them busy: the 3,652 people who registered and voted on the same day. Now, the attention turns to keeping the lines moving Tuesday and making sure everything is running smoothly.

"It's going to keep us busy all day," Election Official Marilyn Flanary said as she looked down at the stack of forms.

Those forms went in half a dozen boxes and bags stuffed in the back of her van. Flanary has been working at the polls for about 40 years now. Her precinct, based at Hope Valley Baptist Church, is one of 57 that will be open tomorrow.

"It's a very busy day with all the pick-up going on," Ashe said. "It's also the last day that absentee by mail can be accepted here at the Board of Elections. So we've had several runs to the Post Office to make sure we're getting all of the absentees."

His advice for tomorrow:

"Be patient. You should know where you're normal, correct polling place is."
