Durham County Story

Public To Weigh In On Future Commuter Train

NORTH CAROLINA

Commuting across the Triangle could one day be a lot less hectic. The state railroad has released plans to build a commuter rail system from Greensboro to Goldsboro using existing freight lines.

Today, people in Johnston County will have their chance to review the project. A public meeting on the commuter rail will be held at 4 p.m. at the Selma Railroad Depot, which would be a key stop on the line.

For international student, Emiliano Suarez from Argentina, getting to school in Durham could be a lot easier, with a better rail service.

"I think it's a good opportunity to try a new way of traveling," he said.

North Carolina railroad officials, say commuter trains would take away some of the heavy traffic we see during rush hour. And they point to cities like Charlotte and Chicago as examples.

"We're getting questions about why can't you do something, and it's becoming clear that railroads are solving problems in many urban areas," said Bill Kincheoloe of the North Carolina Railroad Company.

But the cost comes in at a staggering one billion dollars for the total infrastructure. And in this economic crunch, Durham's mayor says we have to take things slow.

"I'm convinced that this economy is going to turn around, and what I'm talking about is planning for the future," said Mayor Bill Bell.

Kat Dawson’s comments would be the same for many smaller towns along the route. We all would benefit from the rail. I would love to go to Bobcat games on a regular bases but I don’t want to drive from Durham to Charlotte and back. I don’t want to have a drink and drive either. A commuter rail would be idea. I could be safe and so would others. I could go and shop in Charlotte or Raleigh without the hassle of driving. We (the Triangle) could really host a major event like the Summer Olympics with a commuter and high speed rail. Think of the endless posibilities.

Commuter trains between Henderson and Raliegh would be life saving blood for a struggling small town.  Too many people are missing the nostalgic charm of Henderson, and the people of Henderson would benefit from all that a “big city” has to offer in Raliegh.  Economy would be enhanced, and those who work in the city, but desire a more peaceful homelife would find thier dream home in the relaxed comfort of Henderson, North Carolina.
