RALEIGH, N.C. -

Students at North Carolina State University could be paying more to attend school next year.

"Universities like ours in North Carolina are preparing for at least a five percent budget decrease, if not more, this year," said Keith Nichols, director of news communications.

Friday morning, the university's Board of Trustees voted in favor of a 3.6 percent tuition increase for in-state undergraduates and all graduate students, and a 1.7 percent increase for out-of-state undergraduate students.

That amounts to about $140 more for in-state and graduate students, and $280 more for students from out-of-state.

On top of that, trustees suggest a fee increase of $72.20 for all students.

The UNC system's Board of Governors will have to approve the increases before they go into effect.

NCSU is one of several North Carolina schools requesting tuition hikes.

UNC-Chapel Hill officials suggest a 6.5 percent tuition increase for in-state undergraduate students.

North Carolina Central University's in-state undergraduates could see a 3.1 percent tuition hike.
