As a child, Ouida Swann Dest delighted in the mysterious stories about her family's link to the country's first Thanksgiving family.
Now a North Carolina attorney, Dest said she needed proof.
The Charlotte Observer reported Wednesday that Dest hired a Boston genealogist to help locate birth and death certificates, wills and deeds. They were able to trace her bloodline to Mary Chilton, reportedly the first woman to come ashore at Plymouth Rock with the 102 Mayflower pilgrims.
Dest's documentation was recently accepted by the National Registry of the Mayflower.
But the family now has another mystery. A tablecloth and a bedspread have been passed down through 15 generations, and the family wonders whether the artifacts were at the first Thanksgiving 387 years ago.
