North Carolina saw a dramatic drop in the number of fatal car accidents this year during the Thanksgiving holiday, though there were fewer motorists on the roads.
The state Highway Patrol said Monday that seven people were killed in collisions between last Wednesday and Sunday. Last year, 21 motorists were killed.
Troopers also issued more than 18,000 speeding citations during the state's Operation Slow Down. The weeklong program ended Sunday.
A troubled economy forced the first Thanksgiving travel downturn in six years for North Carolina and South Carolina. AAA Carolinas said about 25,000 fewer motorists and 21,000 fewer air passengers had been expected to travel more than 50 miles from home this year in both states.
