DURHAM, N.C. -

Durham City Council will hold it's last public hearing on two roads Duke University wants to permantely close to expand their campus January 21st.

The Durham City Council meeting begins at 7 pm.

For Barry Yeoman, Maxwell Street holds a special place in his heart. For a few years, Yeoman had to rely on the gravel road for his livelihood.

"I was reading the newspaper and the newspaper slashed my cornea," Yeoman said.

Being home alone in his Birch Avenue home, he drove himself to the doctor's office.

"I made a left on Maxwell, and I cut through central campus, and I probably saved 15 minutes,"

Now his lifeline is up for closure. Duke University owns both sides of Maxwell and has plans on closing it to expand its campus. The school also wants to add 800 parking spaces to the area.

John Schelp, president of the Old West Durham neighborhood, is fighting the closure.

"The concern with the neighborhoods on either end of Maxwell Street is that Duke was going to ask the city to permanently close the street, and we wanted assurance in writing that Duke would allow public access to the street," Schelp said.

Last Monday, Duke along with members of local neighborhood associations, spoke before Durham City Council to plead their cases. Councilwoman Diane Cattoti asked the planning commission to put a note on the site plans giving residents the heads up if Duke makes any changes to its plan.

Construction is scheduled to begin in June.

i don't have the time that you might have (seeing how you posted this at 4 in the morning). i just was getting updated on the news and made a quick comment on durham (dook campus area)/dook trends that continue to be confirmed through the years....it was flow of thought, I gotta type quick to keep up…..pigeon-pecking typing is probably all the speed you need to keep up with what comes in front of your mind, but i gotta move. Plus I felt I needed to keep it as simple as possible for those likely to respond. in my life, M, i move quickly, do my job, raise my kid, love my wife, am a productive member of the society, and helper to ALL communities (not just the ones full of people with 7 homes). You’re right, dookies may end up with more time to use CAPS and be up at 4 am since their goals in life usually center around making lots of money, grasping power, taking care of #1, delegating and not having to think (just adhering to prescribed conservative doctrine). You are also correct in stating that parts of my house are made of glass… everyone’s are… but some are to a far greater extent. liberals like me admit to their shortcomings and make attempts to repair them while most conservatives (remember dookie dick nixon) bury theirs in that holier-than-though ego, privilege and their disregard for what is right. HOWEVER, on the subject of dook and their infinite smugness, my walls are made of mortar and brick, bub. I have to run and get back to life and responsibility (I cannot waste another minute and a half on a subject that YOU raised) but I would like to end on this…why do I get the felling, M, that you are reading this with a patch over one eye and that you have to receive a special newspaper now with rounded edges? or there are goggles involved with the morning coffee and paper? are you the dookie with the coordination problem from the article? have a good one bub.

Of course, if you can't spell and don't know how to use a keyboard well enough to use both the upper and lower case, you shouldn't be criticizing others. Those in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

only a dookie or someone willing to live that close to dook is dumb and uncoordinated enough to inflict serious harm on their own body with a seemingly harmless newspaper! as i read on, i also relish in the fact that this is yet another typical example of dook university imposing it's smug will on the community and being above the law. remember, richard nixon learned his interpretation of the constitution while attending the law school of...yes...dook university. thank you dook, you make it so easy...
