RALEIGH, N.C.

Fuller students have done it again! "Students Without Hunger," a program sponsored by the Food Bank of Central and Eastern NC, is a yearly food drive endorsed by the Wake County Public School System. Our students at Fuller collected over 3,000 lbs. of food for the annual event as part of a service learning activity.  Each year, Fuller makes a very large contribution to this program, leaving them with a sense of accomplishment and pride in giving back to the community.  Additionally, students donated hundreds of old and new coats for distribution.

To make the program a success, the students worked to reach a school goal.  The goal of each class was 10 lbs. per child.  When a class reaches that goal, by class, they are recognized with an ice pop party.  Totals are calculated by Mrs. Yates and placed on a large graph in the hallway for all to see.  The graph illustrated the progress of each class towards meeting their goal.

The students became very engaged in this service learning project.  Each day, the graph changed for each class, and students eagerly checked to see how much their class had contributed in working towards the school goal.  From kindergarten to fifth grade, students brought more and more food in both the spirit of giving and of healthy competition.

Debra Robert said: "It was inspiring to see my five and six year olds carrying in heavy cans of food and getting inspired by a graph.  When my class saw the 5th grade classes inching toward our class on the graph, they urged their parents to buy more.  At the end of the day, classes waited to hear the announcements in order to assess how each class was doing. Tears came to my eyes when I saw struggling families donating in such a difficult time."
