HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. -

Town offices will be closed Jan. 1 for New Year's Day.

Residential garbage normally scheduled for collection on Thursday, Jan.  1, will be collected on Friday, Jan. 2.

Residents should place rollout carts at the curb between 7 p.m. the  night before and 6 a.m. the day of collection.

Hillsborough residents' curbside recycling service will not be affected for the holiday.

The Orange County Landfill and all associated services, such as mulch  sales and household hazardous waste collection, will be closed Dec. 31 to Jan. 1. Solid waste convenience centers also will be  closed.

If you plan to recycle corrugated cardboard at the curb, please limit  the number to 10 pieces, with a maximum size of 3 feet by 3 feet each.

If you have more than 10 pieces or if the cardboard is larger than 3  feet by 3 feet and cannot be cut down, please take the cardboard to a  recycling drop-off site. If the bins at the sites are full, please hold  on to your recyclables for a day or two or try another site that may be  less full. The site at Meadowmont Village, behind the Harris Teeter  grocery, is used less often than other drop-off sites.

The Orange County Solid Waste Department urges residents and businesses  to recycle as much holiday paper, cans, bottles, jugs and jars as  possible at the curb or at drop-off sites. This includes non-metallic wrapping paper and cardboard boxes. To further reduce waste, take Styrofoam and other packing materials to mailing houses and unserved food to charities and shelters when those stores or agencies are open.

Residents can recycle any day of the week, any time of the day, at one  of the county's 24-hour recycling drop-off sites. The Hillsborough site is located behind The Home Depot at the Hampton Pointe shopping center off N.C. 86. Other sites are:

• Carrboro Plaza, behind the ABC store, in Carrboro

• Cedar Falls Park, off Weaver Dairy Road in Chapel Hill

• Meadowmont Village, behind Harris Teeter in Chapel Hill

• University Mall, off Estes Drive, across from A Southern Season in
Chapel Hill

For more information on recycling or landfill services, contact the  Orange County Solid Waste Management Department by phone at 968-2788 or  by e-mail at recycling@co.orange.nc.us.
