Some DPS parents are worried their children could be at risk due to an unsafe building.
At a Thursday committee meeting, two PTA members from the Durham School of the Arts said one of the buildings on campus, the Carr Building, was in bad condition.
"I do think the entire electrical system is compromised," said PTA member and parent Jeffrey Goll. "If this wasn't what looks like, to me, a serious safety issue, I wouldn't bring this up now," he added.
Goll and Elaine Collins said they recently toured the building and saw paint peeling from walls; water dripping on textbooks; and water leaking into areas where students ate lunch.
Both parents called on the committee to fix up the building.
School board member Stephen Martin told the parents, "...the process by which you are moving forward, as a committee, is the right thing to do."
"I do understand as a parent, [and] we'll be looking at it to see what things can be done," he added.
Martin and two other school board members have students that attend the school.
School officials say renovations to the building are in the plans for 2011.
Hugh Osteen, the assistant superintendent of operational services said in 2004, parents and officials discussed development plans for the building.
The group decided they would do minor repairs to the Carr Building, and build a new 2,100-square-foot building instead.
They planned to use money acquired from bonds in 2007 to begin a major overhaul of the Carr building in the future.
At the meeting, the parents said they did not anticipate the building's condition would have deteriorated so quickly. They asked for immediate action.
School officials said they would revisit the renovation plans to find a solution, though no immediate time was presented at the time of the meeting.
