Attorney General Roy Cooper gave chiefs of police from across North Carolina an update on statewide priorities for crime fighting.
Cooper spoke on Monday morning at the annual chiefs of police conference at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel in Durham.
Cooper said chiefs must insist on keeping law enforcement on the streets, despite cutbacks in many local budgets. He recommended chiefs consider cutting administrative positions before budget cutbacks would hit the amount of law enforcement staff in the field.
The AG said gang activity and a bad economy are issues facing every jurisdiction in the state. He praised the chiefs for reducing meth labs throughout North Carolina, and promised better computer support for crime fighting in the future.
