TRIANGLE --

Millions of Americans are expected to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. today and answer President-elect Barack Obama's call to service by volunteering.

In Durham, Orange and Wake counties, people are scheduled to participate in the Fourth Triangle Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.

Officials say the goal is to make it "a day on, not a day off."

Volunteers will take on more than 30 projects that range from food sorting to park clean up to building renovations.

Each county has a signature project that will include more than 100 volunteers.

Governor Bev Perdue will deliver remarks at the Martin Luther King Triangle Interfaith Prayer Breakfast. The event is free and open to the public and begins at 8 a.m. at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel in Research Triangle Park.

Several downtown streets will be closed due to today's MLK events.

The 28th Annual Martin Luther King Memorial March will be in Downtown Raleigh this morning. The march begins at the State Capitol building at 10 a.m. and proceeds to the Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts. Drivers should be prepared for detours in and around that area.

North Carolina Central University will be celebrating the day with a Freedom March in Downtown Durham. The march begins at 10 a.m. at the Hayti Heritage Center on Old Fayetteville Street and ends at the BN Duke Auditorium on Central's campus on Fayetteville Street.
