Time Warner and C-Span Tour Bus parked on the campus of Shaw University in Raleigh today. The big question asked from many students, some faculty and staff, was why were they here? Many community Organization's representatives like Jonah Davis, Co-Founder of Sure Vision sat in a seat on the third floor of Estey Hall to learn more about they can make new media work for them.
The university's Mass Communications Department Chair David Marshall response was that, "university's are responsible for servicing the community in ways that step outside of their immediate comfort zone," Marshall went on to say "assisting community organizations with tools needed to gain exposure is a service well needed."
Even with the many social networking sources such as Myspace, Facebook, Youtube, Photobucket etc., most people attended the panel discussion to figure out the best way to make use of the new technology to gain positive exposure. WNCN Director of Digital Journalism Nanette Wilson advice was that, "press releases aren't enough these days, you have to follow up and build personal relationships with journalist."
The panel discussion lead many to believe that although most people can act as their own journalist they still need traditional journalist to guide them through the best ways to make use of the many outlets that are available.
Tamara Robinson, C-Span marketing Representative did just that by taking students and faculty on a tour of how the C-Span mobile operates. "We were invited here to Shaw University by Time Warner Cable," Robinson said, " I was told it was initiative by the Department of Mass Communications to inform non-profit organizations about new-media outlets."
