Meredith College is taking some drastic steps to cut its budget.
Meredith College will freeze salaries, cut retirement contribution by 2.5 percent, eliminate 19 positions and raise tuition by 4 percent next year.
That's on top of cancelling winter commencement and consolidating all classes with fewer than 10 students.
Economists say small private schools such as Meredith will take a harder hit during the economic downturn as parents decide to send their student to less expensive public universities or community college.
