DURHAM, N.C. -
The North Carolina Central University Jazz Ensemble will play at the legendary Newport Jazz Festival this summer.
The 21 musicians will perform Aug. 8 as part of "Marsalis Music Presents" at the festival in Newport, R.I. Saxophonist Branford Marsalis is an artist-in-residence in the jazz studies program at the Durham university, and both and he and his pianist, Joey Calderazzo, will perform at the festival.
The performers for this year's festival haven't been announced.
But last year's line-up included Herbie Hancock, Aretha Franklin, Sonny Rollins and Wayne Shorter.
