Tony McEachern returned to Duke University Medical Center this week, but not as a patient. He is in remission after six years of treatment for an aggressive form of brain cancer.
So he is only too happy to share his story of survival and his hope to help others just like him.
"There are four people a minute getting diagnosed," he said. "And for me, the work being done here at Duke literally saved my life."
McEachern will be participating in the Angels Among Us 5K Walk on Saturday to raise money for the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center.
"The walk is a critical component of what we do," said Dr. Henry Friedman, Deputy Director of the Center. "It was started many years ago by a family who'd been afflicted by a brain tumor. It generated a reasonably small amount of money to start with, but now raises over a million dollars a year, all of which goes to brain tumor research."
But the walk at Duke wasn't enough for McEachern, who is going the extra mile...745 extra miles, to be exact. He is planning to walk from Durham to his home in Sarasota, Florida, a 35-day journey. He'll be accompanied on the trip by his father-in-law, who is driving an escort vehicle, and his sister, who will be documenting the trip in photos.
"For me, it's kind of symbolic," he said. "I came to Duke with a disease and I'm going home without one."
