A volunteer jail ministry program in a North Carolina detention center is graduating a new class of volunteers to work behind bars.
The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office said the graduation will be held Tuesday evening at the detention center. The volunteers have completed a six-week training course.
Officials said the program doesn't require religious education and that volunteers only need to be able to show compassion to prisoners.
Volunteers are responsible for handing out Bibles, running Bible study classes, helping inmates learn how to deal with their behavior and attitudes and assist them with re-entering society when they are released.
