Residents of the Northgate Park neighborhood are trying to find out how their neighborhood dinosaur lost its head.
Built back in 1967, the prehistoric dinosaur was built to be part of the old prehistoric animal trail exhibit. In 2006, the Durham Museum of Life and Science was considering preserving the old dino, even though it was falling apart. The move came as the museum was constructing a new trail that opened in 2008. But this morning, the neighborhood email list has been buzzing all day as residents learn that the 42-year old dinosaur has lost it’s head, part of its neck and some of it's arms.
Mike Shiflett, a Northgate Park resident, sent an email to the listserv offering a $100 reward for the recovery of the broken dino pieces…noting that the head is still missing.
"I want to see that dinosaur's head returned," Shiflett said. "What we do with it will be up to the community. But I want to see that person brought to justice."
It's not clear if the dinosaur was vandalized. Some residents on the email list were already discussing the possibility of rebuilding the damaged dinosaur.

The neighborhood Adopt a Park group has been working over the past couple of years with the museum to help maintain the site and preserve the last remaining (most intact) dinosaur from the original Wescott trail. The person or persons who did this are not only criminals but selfish and arrogant in thinking that they might get away with it.
