RALEIGH, N.C. -

Proponents of legalizing marijuana use to relieve pain and suffering in some patients are getting a day at the North Carolina Legislature to speak out.

The House Health Committee scheduled a committee meeting Thursday to discuss a bill that would allow people with debilitating medical conditions to possess an adequate supply of the drug and not be prosecuted.

The measure also would create a licensing process for qualified patients and those entities that distribute marijuana.

The Marijuana Policy Project says 13 states have laws designed to allow patients to use marijuana to treat illness without threat of state punishment, despite federal law still barring its possession.

Opponents argue marijuana is a dangerous drug linked to health risk and can lead abusers to try other hard-core addictive drugs.

This is LONG overdue. I have debated this subject for 35 years! There is nothing gained from keeping it illegal. Regulation is not working through illegal measures. There is no taxation or management at all! Anybody can smoke it, buy it, while unknowingly supporting underground markets in the meantime. It is time to let this GOD given plant do what it was created to do, SERVE not sentence man!

Finally! Following the lead of 13 other states. Permanently solve the state budget deficit with one simple step. What can I do to help support this bill? Write your representatives and encourage them to support this legislation!

It cures depression better than zoloft or any other over the counter prescription. LEGALIZE it and make a profit on the tax income from it. Most police officers confiscate it and smoke it themselves anyway.

Finally, it’s about time we started recognizing this as a medicine. If you have a chance check out phoenixtears.ca and watch the video “Run from the cure”.

NC is the most progressive state in the southeast. Let's open our eyes to the benefits - LEGALIZE IT!

Cannabis is much safer than most prescribed and over-the-counter medications today. There is no reason to dismiss this highly useful plant. It is scientifically proven and its time has come. Thousands of doctors cannot be wrong.

Why not just legalize it all together- and tax the sale of the drug. can you imagine the tax revenue generated? and think of the tax money saved not having police out looking for the smallest amounts...it would free them up to do real police work. does NC not already sell tax stamps for the dealers? Legalize it and move on to better things like better pay for teachers, more money for law enforcement, better roads, etc.

If this covers migraine sufferers, I am ALL FOR THIS.

Works in California and even Massachussetts has chose to decriminalize... IS NC that far behind the rest of the US?
