New apartments in Durham will provide housing for the homeless.
A groundbreaking ceremony will take place Tuesday at Williams Square Apartments, which will provide 24 units of apartments and a community center for homeless individuals with disabling conditions.
The project is sponsored by Housing for New Hope, which has raised $2.1 million for the $2.2 million project.
The building includes a 2,500-square-foot community center providing meeting space for community gatherings and entertainment, laundry and kitchen facilities, and office space for management and program staff.
The apartments are named in memory of Alphonso Williams, a tireless advocate for homeless persons in Durham and nationally, and a beloved member of the Housing for New Hope family.
They are expected to be open in early 2010.
The ceremony takes place at 10 a.m. at the apartments, 501 E. Carver St.
