A chance selection of a Powerball ticket from a group his Dad bought has made Jeffery Wilson of Kings Mountain a millionaire nearly 29 times over.
Wilson, 27, stepped forward to claim his winning prize from the North Carolina Education Lottery on Tuesday at a press conference in Raleigh. His father bought the winning ticket at the Petro Express on Cleveland Avenue in King's Mountain.
"I didn't believe my dad when he told me that I had won and I think I'm still in disbelief," Wilson said. When asked what he thought may be his first purchase he said, "Maybe a house or a car."
The ticket had been worth $88.1 million. Wilson chose to take a lump sum cash option that made the ticket worth $42.4 million. After taxes he will collect $28.8 million.
Wilson said he doesn't yet know what he will do with the money other than share it with his dad.
Wilson said he plans to attend graduate school in the fall. The winning numbers were 3-11-18-22-28.
This marks the second Powerball winner for North Carolina. Jackie Alston of Halifax won $74.5 million on Nov. 29, 2006.
