Durham rail passengers will board in swanky new surroundings starting Wednesday morning.
The new Amtrak station opens downtown, across the tracks from a small interim building that's been home to the stop for 13 years.
At 10,000 square feet, the new stop, at 601 W. Main St. downtown, is about ten times larger than the old station at 400 W. Chapel Hill St.
A spokeswoman from the Department of Transportation said, at 6,000 square feet, the new waiting room in the renovated Walker Warehouse Building will be the largest in the state.
About 50,000 people came in and out of Durham's station last year. That made it the 5th busiest train station in the state.
