Durham's once decapitated dino has become a celebrity on the Internet, in a way. There are now three pages devoted to the brontosaurus in Northgate Park that lost its head because of vandals in June.
"There are a lot of long-term memories but I think there's a lot of people who just moved to the area recently and they've just gotten caught up in it," said Nancy Rizzo, who is Chairperson of the Save the Bronto Committee. "I think it reflects another time - another era when life was much more simple."
There are two Facebook pages devoted to the sculpture that once served as part of the Museum of Life and Science dinosaur trail. One called "Save Durham's Brontosaurus" had more than 500 fans Friday. A new one called "Brontosaurus Durhamite" was already up to nearly 300.
"Dinosaurs have been fascinating as long as I can remember," said Gisela Gaeta, a Durham grandmother of two who always takes them to this park when they come down from New Jersey. "We're going tomorrow to buy the t-shirts at the fundraiser."
It's on savethebronto.com, which is yet another blog created to support repairs of the creature, where the committee lists its t-shirt selling schedule this weekend:
Saturday July 18th, from 8 to noon, at the craft side of the Durham Farmers' Market
Sunday July 19th, from 8 to noon, at Elmo's Diner
Rizzo said, so far, the committee has been able to come up with about $5,000 in donations for bronto repairs. They're hoping to raise more for other renovations and security.
Sculptors slid the bronto's head back on Thursday evening. By Friday, they were welding pieces of metal together that will help support the outer layer of the 42 year-old structure.
They are hoping to have the head repaired by the opening of the new Museum of Life and Science Dinosaur Trail on July 25.
