North Carolina corrections leaders say they continue to focus on how to improve public safety as officers deal with fresh cases of monitored convicts accused of high-profile crimes while on parole.
Officials said Wednesday that offender oversight has improved since last year's killing of a University of North Carolina student body president exposed flaws in the probation and parole system.
But leaders say they still want to improve technology, staffing and communication while implementing a risk-assessment process to prioritize cases.
The agency is reviewing two recent cases of parolees accused of new crimes. Authorities say Patrick Burris went on a killing spree in South Carolina and Jerry Douglas Case kidnapped a grandfather and his family near Gastonia.
