FT. BRAGG, N.C. --

Understanding different cultures is a critical element in the new mission of the 82nd Airborne Division.

The Fort Bragg-based 4th Brigade is the first conventional unit to deploy to Afghanistan solely focused on mentoring. On Friday, the paratroopers will combine all those skills in a final exam before boarding planes next month to put what they have learned to use.

For months, the 3,300-member brigade has undergone training for cultural awareness, history and building rapport among the people there.

President Barack Obama has made advising the Afghan army a central part of his strategy in the region.
