FORT BRAGG, N.C.
A North Carolina-based Marine has been killed after a roadside bomb exploded near his patrol in Afghanistan.
Base officials say 21-year-old Lance Cpl. Bruce E. Ferrell of Perdido, Ala., died Monday in Helmand province.
Ferrell was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment. Ferrell joined the Marine Corps in November 2007. This was his first deployment.
The Marine brigade is part of a 60,000-troop surge ordered by President Obama to help stabilize the country.
