At 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 19, Habitat for Humanity of Durham will begin construction on a new home in Southwest Central Durham. Built in partnership with Yahshanna Scott, the home is sponsored by Duke University's Fuqua School of Business. The home, at 1011 Carroll Street, is the fourth student-sponsored home the Fuqua School of Business has built with Habitat of Durham.
Approximately 200 first-year MBA students from the Fuqua School of Business will participate in the start of construction as part of a Community Projects Day for their Leadership, Ethics, and Organizations class. "This is a fantastic opportunity for students to get involved in the world outside Duke and begin to give back to their new community," said Matthew Jaffe, Fuqua student and the student chair of ‘The House that Fuqua Built'. "Participating in this build event plays a critical role in the curriculum of first-year students. Habitat affords them the opportunity to get out of the classroom and begin to develop their leadership and problem solving skills."
New homeowner Yahshanna Scott is thrilled to have her home sponsored by the Fuqua School of Business. Scott, a graduate of UNC, is the first in her family to attend college. She works as a resident assistant at the Brookdale Senior Living Center.
Habitat of Durham has built 22 homes in Southwest Central Durham in the last three years and continues to partner with Self-Help, the Durham Community Land Trustees, the City of Durham and Duke University in community-led redevelopment.
Habitat for Humanity of Durham transforms lives and communities by making homeownership possible in partnership with people who care. Habitat has broken ground on more than 225 homes in Durham since 1985. Families are selected based on housing need, ability to repay the loan in full and willingness to partner with Habitat. The 1500 U.S. Habitat affiliates believe decent housing is a matter of conscience and action. Habitat for Humanity International works in 90 countries and since 1976 has provided nearly 2 million people with safe, decent, affordable homes
