RALEIGH, N.C. -

To help increase work zone safety awareness and education among new and future drivers across the state, the N.C. Department of Transportation is inviting all North Carolina school children to participate in the Work Zone Safety Poster Contest.

The theme for the poster contest is Work Zone Safety: Do Your Part.  NCDOT is working to reduce work zone fatalities by educating children, as well as parents, about work zone safety.  Students are asked to think about the many components of a safe work zone and how motorists can do their part to make work zones safe.  Students can then depict their ideas of safe work zones and motorist behavior. Contest rules and entry forms are available online at www.ncdot.org/doh/safety/workzone/postercontest.

First, second and third place prizes will be awarded in each of the four age categories.  The winning entries will be featured in a 12-month wall calendar which will be distributed to the winners and their classes.  Winners will also receive a certificate from NCDOT and a cash prize from Carolinas Associated General Contractors. The deadline for submitting entries is Oct. 16, 2009.

For poster contest guidelines and for more information on work zone safety, please visit our Web site at www.ncdot.gov/~workzone or call (919) 329-7008.
