One man has died after a large tree fell on top of his car located on Old Stage Road and Trueway Lane in Garner.

Garner Fire Chief Thomas Kenneth Walker said, "I've been on the department 25 years and this is the time I've ever seen something like this."

What first responders saw was a huge tree, maybe three feet-across that hit a late model Ford Focus square on.

"Three people were trapped in the vehicle," said the Chief.

When the tree fell it landed on the front passenger side of the car, where police say 21-year old Dejuan Green suffered the worst injuries.

"We have one confirmed fatality on the passenger side," said Trooper Eric Hunt of the state highway patrol. "The driver and a rear seat occupant were transported to Wake Med."

Because the tree was unstable, rescue personnel say the extrication process was difficult and dangerous.

"The tree was quite entangled with the car," said District Chief Jeff Hammerstein of Wake County EMS. "Not only was it difficult to access the people but we had to keep the tree from falling any further."

Police say 32-year-old John Wolf was the driver. He told police the tree just fell on the car. He is reported in good condition at WakeMed.

Also hospitalized was 25-year-old Brandy Donovan. She was in the rear seat of the car. Hospital officials say she too is in good condition.
