A new 203,000-square-foot Walmart opened in Garner Wednesday.
After a ceremonial ribbon-cutting at 7:30 a.m., shoppers rushed into the new store, located at 5141 North Carolina Highway 42.
"Oh, I think it's going to be huge. I mean, people have been talking about it for months and months," said Hayley Reck of Garner.
The store is creating about 350 new jobs, most of which have already been filled.
"That's a substantial impact, putting people back to work and keeping them at work," said Garner Mayor Ronnie Williams.
Many expect the store to attract more shoppers and businesses to the area around the intersection of Highway 42 and Interstate 40.
"As a chamber we are appreciative for them coming in because it brings other businesses, as you can see in the shopping center," said Michelle Samios, President of the Greater Cleveland Chamber of Commerce.
About a dozen businesses opened in the 40/42 area this year, according to the chamber. Some were attracted by Walmart. Others were drawn by the growing number of people living in the area.
"People are looking for places to shop. A lot of people really, for the most part, don't want to drive into Raleigh," said Ben Kaplan at America's Mattress, which opened two weeks ago in the same shopping center as Walmart.
Now, for many things, they don't have to.
"When I first moved out here 15 years ago, we didn't have anything out here. Now it's about to be a city," said Sandy Carrington, who lives in Garner.

This supposedly "good business" has been putting up tacky little "MATTRESS SALE!" signs all over the 40/42 area, right next to all of the "Work from Home!" and "We Buy Houses!" signs. That kind of advertising annoys the heck out of me, and the constant sales make me wonder how high the products are marked up to begin with. No thanks, I'll shop somewhere else where I feel like I'm dealing with honest folks.

I look at it as support. If we as a nation showed more support we'd be in a better situation economically. Get on your high horses and protest and throw eggs all you want, I'll lend some support and push on as the American Spirit is intended. Support good people, good business and help the local economy flourish.

I guess you better label me a conspiracy theorist too, then. What's up with all of the pro-America's Mattress comments on this thread? It's been open for two weeks and has this many people on here singing its praises? Sounds like comments from workers or friends of the owners to me.
