State community college leaders are considering reversing a ban that blocks illegal immigrants from attending state community colleges.
The State Board of Community College Systems Policy Committee discussed several possible changes to the ban.
Some of the proposed changes would require illegal immigrants to have a diploma from a U.S. high school in order to attend a state community college.
The undocumented student would have to pay out-of-state tuition no matter how long they have lived in North Carolina and they would not be allowed to take the place of a legal student in a class.
Students on the campus of Wake Technical Community College seemed split on the issue.
"Illegal immigrants need educations too," Freshman Sean Zandi said. "Maybe if we get them some better education, we could get them some better jobs."
Other students say illegal immigrants don't have a right to be in the country or a college.
"To have them come and take over our spots, no offense to them, but if you want to come to the United States you must be legal," Freshman Crystal Upchurch said.
Thursday the policy committee walked a thin line between both viewpoints of trying to help illegal immigrants in North Carolina become better citizens, while not negatively affecting legal residents.
"This will benefit North Carolina because there are determined people who want to improve themselves who will be with us," Committee Chairman Stuart Fountain said.
However, the potential policy is not an open call for illegal immigrants to come to North Carolina's community colleges.
Fountain said the out-of-state tuition requirement eliminates a lot of people because illegal immigrants are not eligible for federal financial aid.
"You've got to have a very dedicated, determined student who is willing to pay five times the regular instate tuition," Fountain said.
The entire Board of Community College Systems still has to vote on this proposal.
Even if it is approved, illegal immigrants won't be able to enroll in certain programs.
Federal law keeps illegal immigrants from being seated in a licensing program, like a nursing program.

Folks, what im beginning to wonder about is what nefarious plan is going on? Our Government, past & present, Republican & Democrat, have allowed the invasion of 20 to 40 million criminals and uneducated peons which is the largest invasion of any Nation, at any time, by any means & in direct violation of Article IV, Section IV of our Constitution. This refusal to abide by our Constitution or enforce our Immigration Laws should be classified as Treason of the most foul kind, & as grounds for impeachment & trials for Treason! Not only have they allowed the invasion, they force American tax payers to pay Billions on Billions of dollars to provide Welfare, Prison cells, Educate the invaders numerous children, and free medical care , at the same time the invading horde break numerous laws and massive document fraud, & are destroying ourschools, hospitals, communities, culture and standard of living while Robbing, Raping, Killing & Assaulting American Citizens! WAKE UP!

I think every determined person who wants a higher education should be able to pursue one. It would be better then them dropping out of high school to be on the street or in gangs. Having them in school to become better citizens legal or not would be better for the community and society as a whole. After all, the illegal young people did not choose to come here illegally, it was not a choice they made. Imagine if you were being denied an opportunity to better yourself because of actions that were not up to you. Not to mention that having illegals get a better education and a legal path to citizenship would help them in getting better jobs, which in turn would get them better income maybe some insurance and housing that they would be paying and contributing to the community and society as a whole, rather than them living in the shadows of society. Also for the people that are unaware, services like food stamps and medicare or medicaid and any other federal help is not available to any illegal citizen, it is not them taking up any ones spot. These are people who are legal that can go to school to better themselves but decide not to. They decide to be on the welfare system. No federal aid is available to any illegal citizen.

What part of Illegal do people not understand?DUI-Illegal,go to jail.Breaking and entering-Illegal,go to jail.Possesion of narcotics-Illegal,go to jail.Illegal aliens-get a job, education, medical services,People wake up.As long as employers hire them they will keep coming. In the construction field immigration documentation is a joke.If agents were to pull up at job sites and ask for real documentation,Picture ID from NC.I have a feeling the job would not be on schedule the next day.For every person that did not have required ID.Heavily fine the employer & make them pay moving expense for the employees family.Don"t leave them here.If this were to happen just to a few employers and word got out,I guarantee Help wanted ads would come alive again. And it"s not just construction,it"s in all employment to some extent.I"m more familiar with construction. And now you want to let them attend our colleges?Seems to me they are smarter than any of us.

does it smell like somthing is going on behind the scenes? Carlos Flores Vizcarra has served as the consul general of Mexico in Phoenix, in charge of providing services on behalf of his government to the more than 650,000 Mexicans in Arizona at a time of rising animosity toward illegal immigrants. He has been reassigned to head the newly created consulate general of Mexico in Raleigh, N.C. http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/news/articles/2009/08/20/20090820consul0820.html what i DO NOT understand here is, WHY do people NOT UNDERSTAND the term ILLEGAL? as in breaking the LAW? why should we let ILLEGAL ALIENS take away from our U.S. Citizen Chidren?? For every slot you give an illegal alien, you deny that slot to a U.S. citizen! comprende??
