RALEIGH, N.C. -

A report finds North Carolina teenagers face many obstacles to a healthy adulthood.

Medical and child advocacy groups examining data said Tuesday too many adolescents lack health insurance and fail to get a high school diploma within four years.

The report from the North Carolina Metamorphosis Project also raised concerns that 38 percent of high school students say they drank alcohol in the past month and the rate of sexually transmitted diseases among teens has increased.

The report said there's some encouraging news - tobacco use is down among teens and more young people are volunteering in their communities.

Project members say the report is part of their effort to improve the health of 1.4 million state residents ages 10 to 20 in the next decade.
