Gail Taylor owns Rainbow Home Interiors and she said the first phase of the streetscape project built in 2005 has greatly benefited the sleepy town. Taylor looks forward to the construction of the next section.
"It's going to be a positive thing for Fuquay," Taylor said.
The streetscape project is intended to connect downtown Fuquay with Varina, while also improving the overall look of the town.
The new phase will be built from the corner of Main Street and Academy Street -- where Taylor's store is located -- in Fuquay, to downtown Varina.
Town Manager Andy Hedrick said the project cost $1.5 million, which is about $500,000 less than budgeted. With the extra money, the commission voted to bury utility lines on the first few blocks of the ¾ mile stretch.
"When you get rid of the lines, it opens everything up so people don't look up and see power lines everywhere," Hedrick said.
Commissioner Charlie Adcock disagrees with that idea; he wants to put that part of the streetscape project on hold.
"I wanted to make sure that we didn't do part of the project and we're not able to complete the rest of it," Adcock said.
The town also plans to keep the road open during construction, different from the first phase where they closed the street completely. Taylor said there are some initial concerns.
"For the first couple of months we'll have some back ups. Once the Streetscape is built, it will bring more people into town and more businesses into town," Taylor said.
Construction will begin next month and the project will be completed in nine months.
