Crews began clearing land for the $1 billion Triangle Parkway that will stretch from N.C. 147 to Highway 540 in Morrisville.
Jason Peterson with the N.C. Turnpike Authority said building on the second section, the Western Wake Freeway that runs along N.C. 55 from Research Triangle Park through Apex, will begin by November.
"The main difference between this project and other typical roads is the tolling," Peterson said. "It's all at highways speeds and it's built with cashless toll technology. The tolls are a way to pay back the cost of the road."
There will be different options on how people can register and pay for the tolls.
If someone passes by who is not registered, the technology will read the license plate and the person will be billed.
At this point, Peterson said they have not set an amount to charge drivers.
The entire project is scheduled to be completed by 2012.
