North Carolina is giving free help to any homeowners who have fallen behind on their mortgages and are facing foreclosure.
A new public service campaign was announced Tuesday by the Office of the Commissioner of Banks, the Attorney General, and other partners.
The state is expanding its free foreclosure prevention services- previously available to those with sub-prime mortgages-to homeowners with prime rate mortgages.
The toll-free number to call for free assistance is 1-866-234-4857. The website for the program is www.fightncforeclosure.org.
Attorney General Roy Cooper warns homeowners about an increase in rescue scams. He reminds homeowners not to pay anyone who claims they will help work out a mortgage loan.
Suspected scams can be reported at 1-877-5-NO-SCAM or on www.ncdoj.gov.
