A recycling and garbage center in Orange County that was scheduled to shut down in days will now remain open for a few more months.
Tuesday night the Orange County commission voted to allow the Bradshaw Quarry convenience center to stay open until December.
Residents that use the center have protested its closing because it's the only place they have to go nearby to throw out their trash. The next closest location is about 11 miles away. The county was originally going to close it to save money. Now, commissioners will wait to receive a report from the Solid Waste Authority about other possible alternatives to the convenience center, such as curbside pick up.
"The important thing is to what happens with the solid waste work group and what we would like is for the solid waste group to say that convenience centers make sense in the rural community," said Bonnie Hauser, Orange County Voice member.
That report will be ready by October. Commissioners said they will make a final decision on Dec. 15.
