The Capital Quilters Guild announces their second annual Quilt Auction to take place at Historic Oak View County Park on Wake County Heritage Day, Saturday, October 3rd, 2009. The Park is located on Carya Road in Raleigh. Over 80 hand-made quilts will be on display inside and outside the historic farmhouse from 10:00 am until the auction, conducted by a professional auctioneer, begins at 2:00 pm. Bidders can register for the auction anytime between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm. Advance bids will be accepted from those who cannot be present at 2:00 pm. A boutique of smaller items will open at 10:00 am and raffle tickets for the “Country Village” quilt will be sold. Raffle tickets are also available by calling 919-469-5378.

After hearing both the heart-warming and heart-breaking stories told by Mike Dorman, the founder of Military Missions in Action, the 350 member guild has been working closely with MMIA selling raffle tickets for “Country Village”, a large bed quilt pieced and quilted by eleven guild members. 100% of the raffle’s proceeds are earmarked for MMIA’s OPERATION SEMPER FI, to assist a young U.S. Marine Corp veteran who is severely physically challenged after being wounded in combat in Iraq. This project will add a first floor master bedroom and bath, including specialized equipment, to his family home in Lillington. Guild members have spent many months making over 80 quilts for the auction and over 350 items for the boutique. Proceeds from the auction and boutique will allow both MMIA and the Capital Quilters Guild to continue their work in the community.

Both the quilt guild and MMIA are appreciative of the support of Wake County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces. Wake County Heritage Day is a county fair type event featuring live animals, antique farm equipment displays, heritage crafts, live music, antique cars, carriage rides, and much more. Heritage Day is presented in conjunction with the 4-H Youth Fair Day.

Military Missions in Action is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, based in Fuquay-Varina, serving injured men and women of the armed forces in North Carolina. Completely supported by donations and volunteers, their services include household improvements that encourage independent living for disabled veterans. MMIA coordinates with churches, businesses and other organizations in the collection of items to be sent to members of the Armed Forces serving in combat areas and those that have been hospitalized. They solicit corporate sponsors and civic groups to donate materials and conduct fundraising as well as encourage the news media to increase awareness of veterans' needs. The Capital Quilters Guild is pleased and honored to support the work of Military Missions in Action. The guild’s purpose is to promote and perpetuate the art of quilting by teaching and sponsoring events. Guild work in the community includes teaching quilting at the Raleigh Boys & Girls Club and the North Carolina Correctional Institution for Women, as well as donating hundreds of quilts to Quilts on Wheels, Quilts for Kids and SAFEchild.
