CHATHAM COUNTY, N.C. -

A Chatham County resident is being treated for rabies after being exposed after coming in contact with a bobcat on Oct. 2, according to the Chatham County Health Department.

The person's identity was not released and health officials said the bobcat was killed and taken to the state lab for public health. It was there that the bobcat tested positive.

"Healthy bobcats normally do not approach humans. Residents are encouraged to use caution around wildlife and to keep their pets vaccinated against rabies," said health director Holly Coleman.

The county health department animal control division is holding a rabies vaccination clinic for dogs and cats on Nov. 7 from 9 a.m. to noon at the animal control shelter on County Landfill Road in Pittsboro.
