RALEIGH, N.C. -

If there's one thing you can count on every Friday night during the fall, it's big crowds at big football games.

High school stadiums overflow with fans, and this week one student section took the opportunity to raise awareness for a great cause.

Running out onto the field is as much of a tradition as drumlines on Friday nights, but pink shirts? That's a little less common.

"I think it's great," said Wakefield High student Alex Loose. "We're showing that Wakefield is a classy school."

The Wakefield student section is usually a sea of maroon and grey, but for one night they shed the school colors in favor of pink, to raise awareness for breast cancer.

"We're the Wackos, we show support and we care about all the survivors," said Wakefield student Nicole Weaver.

"They know the reason they're doing it, and they're doing it for a great cause," said Wakefield Athletic Director Dexter Cooley. "That's our kids; that's the Wakefield kids."

The plan formed earlier this week and spread quickly through a Wakefield Wackos Facebook page.

Soon everyone was on board.

"Even the guys," said Weaver. "Pretty manly."

Seven-year survivor Missy O'Neal said she was touched by the "pink-out" and impressed with the students who organized it entirely by themselves.

"It's great to see students who recognize that this disease is so prevalent," said O'Neal. "And that as young women and young men, they could do something to raise awareness."

"It's a very important cause and it means a lot," said Loose. "It hits home with a lot of people."

The good karma certainly didn't hurt; Wakefield's defense had an interception in the end zone with time expiring to hold off Leesville Road 35-32.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month didn't just affect the football stands; Wakefield students had a similar look for last night's volleyball game, too.
