DURHAM, N.C. -

The Durham Police Department has fired an officer after a recent audit report showed she abused overtime compensation.

Alesha Robinson-Taylor was the Secondary Employment Coordinator for the police department.

The audit report ordered by City Manager Thomas Bonfield showed Robinson-Taylor accumulated about $62,000 in overtime over a year's time.

She has been on administrative leave with pay since the report was released Sept 30.

Robinson-Taylor plans to appeal the termination of her employment, said her attorney, Butch Williams.

In a statement, Williams said: "Her termination is not complete until she's had an opportunity to grieve the process and exercise all of her due process rights. She plans to vehemently defend against any and all allegations of wrongdoing."

The State Bureau of Investigation has taken over the case to determine if there was any criminal wrongdoing.

The city of Durham plans to lay out new rules for overtime pay.
