Duke is about to find out whether coach David Cutcliffe's bold preseason proclamation was prescient or just premature.
After a week off, the Blue Devils (3-3, 1-1 ACC) are preparing for a stretch against Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina. Those teams are a combined 6-9 against the Bowl Subdivision.
A successful run through those games and Duke could make Cutcliffe look pretty smart for declaring in July that "I believe we are a bowl team."
The Blue Devils have gone from losers against a Championship Subdivision team (Richmond) to 5-point favorites against one of the ACC's perennial bowl teams. Maryland (2-5, 1-2) visits this weekend, and quarterback Thaddeus Lewis says Duke is a confident team that's facing a golden opportunity.
