RALEIGH, N.C. -

The kindness of some local high school students made it possible for more than 60 athletes with developmental disabilities to compete in a tennis tournament this weekend.

For the past three years, five local high schoolers have organized a special olympics tournament

The two day event includes an overnight hotel stay for the athletes and a dance.

Organizers have to apply for grants and find ways to raise money so that the entire event is free for the participants.

It is one of the only tournaments of its kind in the country, organizers say.

"No one really does it," said Ashley Demsko, a student at Apex High School and a co-organizer of the event. "It's an opportunity for all the athletes to get out have a good time, participate, make friends. It's fun for them and it's just good for us to see them have a good time."

More than 120 volunteers also help to make the tournament a reality.
