DURHAM COUNTY, N.C.

Research Triangle Park, NC, USA, November 18, 2009 - This week, Syngenta Biotechnology, Inc., (SBI) concluded its month-long internal food drive to benefit local volunteer organizations. The RTP-based research facility collected more than 1,750 pounds of food, which was donated to the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle and Communities in Schools of Durham. Both organizations will use the donated food to help feed children from low-income families.

"The food raised by Syngenta will benefit our Weekend Backpack Program," said Elizabeth Levene, program specialist for Communities in Schools of Durham. "The program provides 50 students from very low-income families with a backpack filled with nutritious, non-perishable food each weekend to combat hunger and help them come to school Monday ready to learn. We are grateful for this donation from Syngenta as we are for all donations, which help sustain this program throughout the year."

SBI chose to hold a food drive this year because of the immense local need and the Syngenta commitment to sustainable food production. The group wore t-shirts while they were packing the shuttles that read, ‘25 years of contributing to food security, one community at a time' to celebrate the company's commitment to food stewardship and the 25th anniversary of SBI.

"We have a great culture, and our employees are very active in the local community," said Roger Kemble, head of Syngenta Crop Genetics Research. "This food drive provided a way for our staff to impact local food security, which is a great complement to our company's global impact on food and agriculture. This is just one of many ways in which our staff supports the local community through volunteer efforts and contributions."

To get employees into the spirit of food collection, a contest was held to see which of the four buildings at SBI could collect the most food in a month. The winning team was allowed to take some extra time out from the work day to help load the shuttles.

"Especially during the holiday season, we want to make sure children, seniors and families have food on the table," said Jill Staton Bullard, co-founder and executive director of Inter-Faith Food Shuttle. "Community partners like Syngenta help make that possible."
