DURHAM, N.C. -

Kito Jones didn't spend Thanksgiving lunch around a table surrounded by her family. Instead, she spent it scooping out water for hot chocolate at the Durham Rescue Mission.

"We have a lot of reasons to be thankful for so many things," she said as she looked down at the pot of hot water. "It makes you feel so good to give. You are blessed to be a blessing to others."

The hair salon owner from Durham and her son were two of dozens of volunteers who came to this part of east Durham to serve others on Thanksgiving.

"It's cool. I got to say, instead of celebrating Thanksgiving, I got to feed the homeless," said her son Kimari Jones. "That's pretty special in itself."

Some are homeless here. Some aren't. Many have fallen on hard times this year.

"It helps a lot of people; keeps a lot of people from being homeless," said Amanda Wilkerson, who is from Durham. "I'm sick. I'm a diabetic and everything. But I'm still here for a reason."

Wilkerson sat on a church pew Thursday morning before the mission served lunch. Next to her sat Michele Bostic, a single mother who's trying to put herself through school in this troubled economy.

"It helps until I'm more financially stable," she said about the lunch that so many volunteers had taken time to prepare.

Josh, thanks for sharing this heartwarming story. Kito, Kimari and the other volunteers helped display the good that is in all of us. In these unpredictable times where so many are adversely affected, it's refreshing to see that we are all connected and that compassion exists. www.KwanzaJones.com

The biggest farce concerning no cost of living increases is based upon the calculated fact that Gov't expects citizens to forget and become complacent. Remember the $4 a gallon gas prices barely a year ago? A staggering 75-125% increase overnight for daily goods and commodities skyrocketed due to transportation costs associated with fuel. Now with fuel back to mid $2 ranges why haven't those increased prices for daily goods we all experienced, decreased accordingly? It's a shame because I predict when the fuel spikes again the prices will increase again from their current levels which are way out of sync already with transportation costs. In the end we'll experience a "double" increase of prices when fuel spikes again in the future. No cost of living for the elderly, double increased prices = grave, serious, troubled times ahead for our senior citizens.

How can this be??? We had 2.5% GDP growth this quarter and the Government assured us that the recession is over. In fact, they all gathered in Washington to congratulate themselves, and stuff their fat faces with turkey paid for with taxpayer loot, discussing how they might print and spend another trillion in stimulus that miraculously won't produce any jobs because it ends up in the pockets of their friends. I hope they choke on their food.
