CLAYTON, N.C. -

Pastor Alan Swartz has heard the Haiti stories from church members who were there when the earthquake hit.

"Somebody had come in ... and their arm had been broken off, they had to use duct tape to stop the blood," said Swartz, Pastor of Horne Memorial Methodist church in Clayton.

Twenty of the church's members were on a mission in Haiti when the earthquake hit. They are all safe and are now helping with disaster relief on site in Haiti.

Back at home, Swartz is collecting medical supplies, including pain killers and antibiotics to be sent over as soon as possible.

Michael Miller made his donations Thursday morning.

"I brought several packs of IV solution, IV set ups, starter packs," Miller said.

Jo Elaine Harris, a district pastor for the mission for the Methodist Church, said this is one country that needs all the aid it can get, especially during an emergency.

"This is critical. Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and they have been slammed by one disaster after another."

So far, church officials said that they have supplies coming, in but need more donations.

Dr. Maria Fakadej with Duke Health of Clayton gave bandages, gauze and other necessities.

"I though it was important to do because in a time of crisis it's good for everybody to do a little to help out," Fakadej said.

Although medical supplies are the number one things they need, the group is also collecting food. They said rice and beans is an easy meal for the people in Haiti. They're also looking for canned food with easy-to-open lids.

"The only other thing that I would suggest is tarps because so many people are without homes. It would be a fine temporary shelter," Swartz said.

The church is collecting donations at a warehouse just up the street from the church at 501 Atkinson Road in Clayton. They will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. through the middle of next week. The church is hoping to send out these supplies to Haiti in the next couple of days.
