CUMBERLAND, N.C. -

Another veteran Democrat in the North Carolina Senate isn't running for re-election this year.

Sen. Larry Shaw of Cumberland County announced Thursday he won't seek another two-year term. He's served in the Legislature since 1995.

The announcement brings to seven the number of Senate Democrats since last fall who have resigned or said they won't run for re-election. The candidate filing period begins Monday.

Shaw didn't give a reason for stepping aside. He turns 60 years old in June. Shaw says he will keep running his food services company.

He is a practicing Muslim who was named last year as chairman of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, a civil rights group.
