Durham Police Department's Squad 4-A showed up at a house last night just in time to catch a robber.
Durham Police said they responded to the home near Fayetteville Street around 11:20 p.m. after an elderly woman called 911. Someone was trying to get into her house.
She told police she heard a noise and then saw a man wearing a black skeleton mask in her hallway. She said that man pushed her down and demanded money. He grabbed her before taking $11. He ran and hid in the closet when he heard the police.
"When officers arrived, they found a trash can sitting under an open window and saw the window screen lying on the ground," said police spokesman Kammie Michael. "They repeatedly called for the resident to come to the door, but they got no response."
When police got closer, they could hear someone faintly calling for help. After they got inside, they found the resident, who is in her 80s, inside the house.
Police said the suspect, Timothy Rorie, age 45, was hiding in a bedroom closet. Officers placed him into custody after a brief struggle.
He was charged with:
- first-degree burglary
- first-degree kidnapping
- sexual battery and common-law robbery
- Police took him to the Durham County Jail under an $800,000 bond.
The victim wasn't injured.
