DURHAM, N.C. -

Durham Public Library's downtown branch looked like a scene from "The Amazing Race" TV show Wednesday afternoon.

Twenty-one incoming Duke freshmen gathered outside the library to get their first clue for Explore Durham, a program designed to introduce new students to Durham.

Like the show, the students are organized into three groups. They will get riddles or cryptic clues and they'll have to travel by foot to the correct location for the next step.

Students will make stops at Durham's Locopops, The Book Exchange, The Scrap Exchange and the farmer's market as a part of the competition.

The race is intended to familiarize students with the Durham community, according to Explore Durham organizers.

Explore Durham is a part of Project Change.

Project Change lasts eight days. It's a summer program for its 21 members, aimed at teaching students how to be leaders in their community while attending Duke.

As a part of Project Change, students will work at Genesis Home, TROSA, and El Central Hispano, which are nonprofit, community service organizations in Durham.

Organizers say they hope the community service activities will help students see social change firsthand in Durham.
